Electric vehicles sales set new record
Queenslanders are embracing electric vehicles at a faster rate than residents of any other state or territory according to a new report from the Australian Automobile Association.

Sales of electric vehicles have surged throughout Australia and Queensland is leading the charge with a quarterly increase of almost 80%, according to new date from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA).
The AAA’s quarterly EV Index shows that Queensland had the strongest growth of EV sales in the country in the second quarter of 2025, with 5,655 sales representing a 79.87% change on first quarter sales of 3,144.
The share of new vehicles sold in Queensland in Q2 2025 that were battery electric grew to 8.15%, up from 5.28% in Q1 2025.
Despite Queensland’s strong performance it’s the ACT that leads the nation on EV market share with around one-in-five new vehicles sold there (21.08%) being electric.
When it comes to total EV sales, NSW led the nation for Q2 2025 with 9117 sales, a 60% increase on Q1, followed by Victoria with 8638 sales, a 69.47% increase on Q1.
Record-breaking EV sales scross Australia
Overall, EVs achieved record sales in Australia in the three months to 30 June, lifting sales by 65.37% on Q1 to reach 9.31% of all new car sales, according to the nation’s peak motoring body.
The AAA data shows Australians bought 29,244 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the June quarter – up from the 17,901 sales registered in the three months to 31 March.
While sales of all light vehicles increased by 10.42% in the June quarter, BEV market share climbed from 6.29% in the previous quarter to 9.31% in Q2.
Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles still dominate overall new vehicle sales, however, with 226,306 sales, up 9.90% from the Q1 total of 205,911.
Hybrid vehicles maintain strong presence
The AAA report found that despite quarterly fluctuations, hybrids have also grown strongly over the past two years, outselling BEVs in eight consecutive quarters.
Total hybrid sales fell only slightly from 47,014 in Q1 to 46,732 in Q2, down 0.6%, but with total light vehicle sales up, the hybrid market share slipped from 16.52% to 14.87%.
Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) have also been growing strongly, albeit from a low base since the EV Index was launched in Q1 2023.
The removal of the Federal Government’s Fringe Benefits Tax exemption on 31 March saw June 2025 quarter sales of PHEVs fall 13.19% (11,902 v 13,711 sales) and market share drop from 4.82% to 3.79%.
Medium SUVs remain Australia’s most popular vehicle segment representing 24.55% of total new light vehicle sales.
In the June 2025 quarter, almost half (47.83%) of new medium SUVs sold were ICE; 23.92% were hybrids; 22.24% were BEVs; and 6.01% were PHEVs.
This is the highest proportion of BEVs in medium SUV sales on record, surpassing the previous record of 21.96% in Q2 2023.
