Electrified vehicles capture almost half of new-car market
New AAA data shows electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 49.16% of new-car sales in the June quarter, driven by record EV growth.

Electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for nearly half of all new vehicles sold in Australia during the June quarter, according to the latest edition of the Australian Automobile Association's (AAA) EV Index.
The report found that 49.16% of new light vehicles sold during the quarter were either battery electric, plug-in hybrid or hybrid models, highlighting the continuing shift in consumer demand towards lower-emission vehicle technologies.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) both reached record market shares during the quarter, accounting for 21.03% and 10.58% of sales respectively.
BEV sales more than doubled between the March and June quarters, rising from 34,435 vehicles to 69,414. It was the largest quarterly increase on record for battery electric vehicles.
As a result, BEVs increased their market share from 12.25% to 21.03%, surpassing hybrids for the first time since the June quarter of 2023.
Despite losing ground to BEVs, hybrid vehicles also recorded a strong result.
Quarterly hybrid sales reached an all-time high of 57,919 vehicles and secured a market share of 17.55% – the second-highest share on record.
The growth of electrified vehicles came at the expense of internal combustion engine (ICE) models.
Australian vehicle market share by fuel type

ICE vehicles accounted for 50.84% of all new vehicle sales in the June quarter, down from 64.23% in the previous quarter.
The result represents both the lowest market share ever recorded for ICE vehicles and the largest quarterly decline since the AAA began tracking the data.
Since the EV Index was launched in 2022, the share of new vehicles powered solely by petrol or diesel engines has fallen dramatically, from almost nine in every 10 sales to around five in every 10.
Overall, the Australian new-vehicle market reached a record 330,111 sales during the quarter. Strong growth in battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles more than offset declining sales of traditional internal combustion vehicles.
The report also found the changing market dynamics are particularly evident in the medium SUV segment, Australia's most popular vehicle category. In just over four years, BEVs have increased from less than 1% of medium SUV sales to 37.30%.
Produced by the AAA, the EV Index tracks Australia's transition to new vehicle technologies.
The quarterly report brings together information from national, state and territory sources and analyses new light vehicle sales, providing consumers, businesses and fleet managers with insights into the trends reshaping the Australian vehicle market.
