The new heavy-duty version of Ford’s best-selling Ranger pickup isn’t due to hit the market until early 2026 but Ford has released pricing and specification details of key variants, with the new ute starting at $82,990 and rising through three-variants to $89,990.
That places the Ranger Super Duty above the price of the most expensive diesel-powered double cab model in the current Ranger lineup, the $80,640 Platinum V6, and the most expensive plug-in hybrid variant the $86,990 Stormtrak PHEV, but below the 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 powered Raptor which retails for $90,440.
The heavy-duty Ford is also priced above the vehicle likely to be among its key rivals, the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series Double Cab which retails for between $77,300 and $81,500 in four-cylinder turbo diesel form.
The Ranger Super Duty’s reason for the pricing is its enhanced towing and load hauling versus a standard Ranger, with the new model boasting class-leading 4,500kg maximum braked towing capacity, an 8,000kg Gross Combined Mass (GCM), and payload up to 1,982kg.
It’s these sorts of beefed-up numbers that are likely to pique the interest of fleets looking for a heavy-duty workhorse in a mid-size pickup body size, as well as private owners who tow large caravans or boats.
For the latter buyers the options were previously restricted to expensive GVM upgrades of conventional pickups like the Ranger, the somewhat agricultural LandCruiser 70 Series, or pricey reengineered full-size US pickups such as Ford’s own F1-50, the Chevrolet Silverado, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra.
Crucially, the Ranger Super Duty is factory-built as opposed to reengineered model, while also being much less expensive than the US pickups which can range in price from $120,000 to $180,000 depending on variant.
The new Ford also offers a more refined interior and superior features to the workmanlike LandCruiser.
What is different about the Ford Ranger Super Duty?
For off-road enthusiasts, Ford claims its new model has been purpose-built to tackle extreme off-road adventures, with up to 299mm ground clearance, 1,710mm track width, and 850mm water wading.
Standard features of the Super Duty include a sealed snorkel, front and rear differential locks, plus upgraded axles, suspension and chassis, prompting Ford to claim its new ute brings unprecedented levels of strength, technology, and versatility to the mid-size truck segment.
Enhanced payload is a cornerstone of the Super Duty’s enhanced capability with the new model having a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 4,500kg, a maximum braked towing capacity of 4,500kg, and 8,000kg Gross Combined Mass (GCM).
This compares with the 3350kg maximum GVM of current Ranger variants, which offer 3500kg maximum braked towing, and up to 6400kg Gross Combined Mass (GCM).
Looking at the Super Duty model by model, the single Cab-Chassis variant has the highest payload of 1,982kg, followed by the Super Cab-Chassis at 1,896kg, and the Double Cab-Chassis at 1,825kg.
The high payload figures are enabled by higher Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR), rated at 1,900kg for the front axle and 2,800kg for the rear axle, versus 1450kg and 1959kg for conventional Rangers.
What powers the Ford Ranger Super Duty?
Under the bonnet, Ford has opted to use the proven 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine found elsewhere in the Ranger and Everest range, but the engine has been retuned for this application and adopts AdBlue diesel exhaust emissions technology to ensure it meets EUVI heavy-duty vehicle emissions requirements.
The new calibration retains the engine's full torque output of 600Nm of at 1750rpm, but power drops from 184kW to 154kW at 3,250 rpm.
The engine also benefits from an upgraded cooling system to ensure dependable performance and strong pulling power even when fully laden.
"The Ranger Super Duty project was about pushing the boundaries of what a mid-size truck can achieve," said Drew O'Shannassy, Program Supervisor for Ranger Super Duty.
"We focused relentlessly on core capability – increasing GVM, GAWR, and towing capacity – while ensuring the truck remains incredibly durable and easy to operate in challenging environments.
“The unique calibration of the V6 diesel ensures that crucial torque is available right where our customers need it for heavy loads, while meeting modern emissions standards."
Pricing for the new model starts at $82,990 for the Ranger Super Duty Single Cab-Chassis, rising to $86,490 for the Super Duty Super Cab-Chassis, and tops out at $89,990 for the Super Duty Double Cab-Chassis.
What tray options does the Ford Ranger Super Duty have?
These prices are all without tray fitted, with Ford giving buyers the option to have a tray fitted by their preferred supplier, or to choose one of three Ford Licensed Accessory steel trays in galvanized silver, body colour and matte black.
Prices for Ford’s Galvanized Steel Tray start at $5,966 for the Double Cab-Chassis, rising to $6,296 for the Super Cab-Chassis, and $7,121 for the Single Cab-Chassis. Opting to have the tray painted body colour adds between $1,200 and $1,700 approximately depending on the vehicle paint colour, with the matte-black tray around $1000 more on top of this, depending on variant.
The Ranger Super Duty Cab-Chassis is scheduled to go on sale in early 2026, with Ford promising further details regarding Ranger Super Duty Pickup and XLT variants, as well as a full suite of vehicle personalisation accessories in coming months.
