Ford Ranger’s powertrain revamp

Ford drops 2.0L bi-turbo diesel for upgraded single turbo and 10-speed auto; V6 diesel expands across Ranger and Everest in 2026.

Ford Australia has dropped its 2.0-litre biturbo-diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission from the Ranger and Everest lineups, replacing the engine with an updated version of its 2.0-litre single turbo-diesel engine and making a 10-speed the new default automatic transmission choice on both models.

The brand’s powerful 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel will also now be made more widely available across both Ranger and Everest variants, with the revised line-up expected to launch in the first half of 2026.

The decision to axe the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel has reportedly been driven by changes in Europe, where the engine ran afoul of tightening emissions, prompting Ford to invest in the single turbo version, which gets a new fuel injection system and timing chain as parts of its upgrades.

The presence of the recently launched 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol powered Ranger plug-in hybrid (PHEV) would have also factored into Ford’s decision, with the additional drivetrain adding complexity to the already sprawling model ranges.

No power and torque figures have been released for the upgraded 2.0-litre single turbo-diesel engine, which is in its current guise is available only on the base Ranger XL and with a six-speed automatic, where it delivers outputs of 125kW/405Nm and fuel consumption of between 7.6L/100km and 8.0L/100km, depending on variant.

The soon-to-be-discontinued 2.0-litre biturbo-diesel has long been one of the more responsive four-cylinder engines available in a ute or SUV, with healthy power and torque outputs of 154kW/500Nm and fuel consumption of between 7.2L/100km and 7.6L/100km depending on variant.

The biggest stick in the 2026 Ford Ranger and Everest lineup will continue to be the brand’s gutsy 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel, which musters a hearty 184kW/600Nm and will now be made available more widely across the range.

Currently, the 3.0-litre V6 diesel is available only on high-end Ford Everest Sport, Tremor, Wildtrak and Platinum variants, and on Ford Ranger XLT, Sport, Wildtrak and Platinum trims, but consumers can expect to see lower-grade models offered with the V6 come the new year.

The range-topping Ranger Raptor will continue to be powered by an unchanged version of the current twin-turbo 3.0-litre petrol V6, which puts out an impressive 292kW/3500rpm.
