GWM doubles down on PHEV utes

GWM has expanded its electrified ute offering by adding the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) drivetrain of its larger Cannon Alpha Hi4-T PHEV to the more affordable Cannon ute range.

Despite their similar names GMW’s Cannon Alpha and Cannon utes are distinct models and until now the PHEV drivetrain has been reserved for the more upmarket Cannon Alpha.

But the addition of the brand’s Hi4-T PHEV technology to the lower-priced Cannon doubles GWM’s electrified ute offering and introduces the so-called ‘intelligent hybrid technology’ to a potentially broader audience.

While driveaway pricing for the Cannon PHEV has not yet been released, GWM is promising it will be one of Australia's most affordable plug-in hybrid utes.

GWM Cannon PHEV pricing and market position

The current Cannon 4x4 dual-cab lineup starts at $39,490 for the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel powered Premium and rises to $57,990 for the 2.4-litre turbo diesel powered Alpha Ultra.

Driveaway pricing for the Cannon Alpha PHEV dual-cab 4x4 range, meanwhile, starts at $61,490 for the 2.0-litre turbo petrol powered PHEV, and rises to $67,990 for the Ultra PHEV with the same drivetrain.

The new Cannon variant will introduce the Alpha’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, paired with a high-output electric motor integrated into the transmission bell-housing, and a 33.1kWh battery pack mounted beneath the cargo tray.
The petrol electric powertrain delivers combined outputs of 310kW/750Nm, while delivering fuel consumption of just 2.4L/100km on the NEDC cycle.

This compares favourably with key rival the BYD Shark 6 Performance which costs $62,900 (MRLP) and mates a 2.0-litre petrol turbo four-cylinder and dual-motor hybrid system for combined outputs of 350kW/700Nm, fuel consumption of 1.3L/100km (WLTP) and an electric-only range of 80km (WLTP).

The $5,000 less expensive Shark 6 Dynamic Pickup utilises a 1.5-litre petrol turbo four-cylinder to deliver outputs of 321kW/650Nm.

Ford’s Ranger is the other notable PHEV player in the ute segment, with pricing from $61,000 to $72,000.

Its 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine is mated to a 75kW electric motor and an 11.8kWh battery, delivering outputs of 207kW/697Nm, fuel consumption of 1.3L/100km 2.9L/100km (WLTP), and an electric-only range of 49km.

Class-leading electric range and fuel economy

GWM claims the Cannon PHEV has its rivals covered with its class-leading 115km of electric-only driving range (NEDC), while also delivering competitive combined-cycle fuel consumption of 2.4L/100km (NEDC), and a maximum driving range of 1037km (NEDC).

Like the Ranger but unlike the BYD, GWM’s new ute retains a traditional transmission and mechanical four-wheel drive system with high and low-range, where the BYD utilises independent electric motors at the front and rear of the vehicle with no mechanical connection between them and no low-range transfer case.

Towing capacity and Vehicle-to-Load technology

Along with its category competitive 3500kg braked towing capacity the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV also offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, with integrated 230V power outlets in the tub allowing the ute to be used a mobile power source for running power tools, camping equipment, or household appliances when needed.

GWM is promising further specifications, pricing and details for the new GWM Cannon Hi4-T PHEV closer to the launch date in late September.
