GWM Eyes V8 Future With Tank 700 4x4
GWM flags future V8 power for Tank 700 luxury 4x4 and a Ferrari-rivalling mid-engine supercar.

That might be about to change, however, following GWM’s reveal at the recent Beijing Auto Show of a V8-powered Tank 700, the brand’s premium, large 4x4 that’s positioned as a rival to the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series.
The Tank 700 is not yet offered in Australia but is sold in China with a 3.0-litre V6-based plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.
V8 Tank 700 targets Australia and New Zealand
GWM has previously said the model is under consideration for Australia where it already sells the smaller Tank 300 and Tank 500 4x4s.
GWM Chairman Jack Wei confirmed at the Beijing Auto Show the brand would expand its premium off-road portfolio with the addition of a V8-powered Tank 700, hinting strongly that the V8 would target Australian and New Zealand markets.
“This is completely opposite to the current environment or trend in China; it does not fit the Chinese market,” Mr Wei said.
“We developed this V8 to meet the needs of more global users, in markets such as Australia and New Zealand.”

Former McLaren engineer leads GWM supercar development
The Tank 700 wasn’t the only V8 model GWM discussed at the Beijing show, with the brand also flagging a new GF supercar that’s set to feature a 4.0-litre twin-turbo hybrid V8.GWM GF is the car maker’s performance division, similar to Mercedes-Benz’s AMG brand and the Toyota GR range.
Speaking to journalist at the Beijing show Mr Wei confirmed that a mid-engine GWM GF supercar was under development and due for reveal in 2027.
The brand has appointed former McLaren GT Chief Engineer Adam Thomson to oversee the vehicle’s development.
“The supercar uses a high-performance V8, while the Tank 700 uses a normal V8,” Mr Wei said.
V8 engines still matter in key global markets
A statement from GWM said the new models signal a broader progression in GWM’s strategy with the Tank 700 V8 representing a key step in expanding GWM’s high-output powertrain offering, enabling the brand to respond to demand in markets where large-capacity engines continue to resonate.
