Despite unprecedented competition from new Chinese rivals, many of them fully electrified, Toyota has opened the gap on its competitors with a record 23,576 sales, marking its best May sales result.

Hybrids accounted for 45.6% or 10,734 of Toyota’s 23,576 sales in May, with the RAV4 hybrid notching up 4002 new registrations, trailing only the HiLux ute which sold 4,952 units.

Other strong performing models included the Toyota LandCruiser Prado (2,732 sales), LandCruiser 300 Series (1,898 sales), and the LandCruiser 70 Series range (1147 sales).

Toyota’s May performance was its strongest so far this calendar year, with its combined year-to-date figure of 100,751 units placing it ahead of the 100,398 units recorded to the same point in 2024.

The Japanese car maker set a new sales record in 2024 of 241,296 vehicles, a figure which included a record 118,000 hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

Looking beyond the industry leader, overall new vehicle sales were down 5.2% compared with the same month in 2024, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

SUVs once again led the market, with sales volume growing to 60.4% of all new vehicles sold, compared with 55.8% in 2024, underlining their status as the preferred choice for many buyers.

Ford finished the month in second sport with 8,464 sales, followed by Mazda (7,845), Kia (6,903) and Hyundai (6,708).

Total new vehicle sales in Queensland fell 2.6% to 22,924 compared with 2024, representing the smallest percentage decrease of any state or territory.
