MG is poised to launch its new all-electric MG4 EV Urban, promising pricing that is comparable to a similarly sized petrol-powered car.

The battle for the title of Australia’s most affordable EV is about to heat up further with MG poised to launch its new cut-price MG4 EV Urban.

The new model features attractive five-door hatchback styling, and a front-wheel drive electric powertrain with the option of a 43kWh or 54kWh battery.

MG says its new model is designed to make electric mobility more attainable, a sentiment that seems particularly well timed given recent steep hikes in the price of petrol and diesel due to the war in the Middle East.

The MG4 EV Urban is described as having room for five adults, a generous 382-litre luggage capacity and being “engineered to meet a five-star safety rating”, although it has not yet been confirmed as having a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

In the UK where the car is already on sale its standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist with departure warning, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, forward and rear collision warnings, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The interior of the MG hatch features a 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a 7.0-inch driver display screen, with wireless phone charging and 360-degree camera, depending on the variant.

MG Motor has not yet released details on its new model’s pricing, range or on-sale date, but local media outlets are forecasting an April arrival for the entry-level MG electric vehicle.

As for pricing, MG has said only that the MG4 EV Urban will “offer pricing comparable to similar internal combustion vehicles”, with some reports suggesting it will be in the vicinity of the BYD Dolphin which starts from $29,990.

Other affordable EVs that are potential rivals include the BYD Atto 1 compact hatchback priced from $23,990 (MRLP), the BYD Atto 2 compact SUV priced from $31,990 (MRLP), the GWM Ora Lux priced from $33,990 driveaway, and the Chery E5 Urban priced from $38,990 (MRLP).

No details on range have been supplied, but in the UK the MG4 Urban with the standard-range 43kWh battery boasts 110kW of power and 323km of driving range, while the 54kWh extended range variant is good for 118kW of power and up to 415km of range.
