MG U9 electric ute key points
- 430km driving range from a 102.2kWh LFP battery.
- Dual-motor AWD powertrain producing 325kW and 700Nm.
- 3,500kg braked towing capacity matches many diesel ute rivals.
- 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds, making it one of the quickest utes on sale.
- Features electronic air suspension and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability.
- Includes a 236-litre front boot (frunk) and pallet-sized tray.
- Supports 11kW AC and 115kW DC fast charging, with a 20-80% recharge in about 42 minutes.
- Receives a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
Australia will be the first market in the world to get the fully electric version of MG’s U9 ute, with the new model due on sale here later this year or in early 2027.
The MGU9 EV is a battery electric version of the brand’s existing, diesel-powered U9 ute, and will line up against the likes of the Toyota HiLux BEV, LDV eT60, and KGM Musso EV 4WD.
Described by MG as a lifestyle ute, the MGU9 EV boasts a 430km driving range, 3.5-tonne towing capacity, and 0-100km/h acceleration of just 5.8 seconds.
Powered by a 102.2kWh LFP battery and dual electric motors, it produces a healthy 325kW/700Nm, compared with 160kW/520Nm for its 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel stablemate.

The new electric ute also boasts all-wheel drive traction and electronic air suspension, as well as 6.6kW external and 2.2kW internal V2L (Vehicle to Load) technology.
While the MGU9 EV’s braked tow rating of 3,500kg is competitive with other ICE and PHEV-powered segment rivals, its 685kg payload is well short of the 1,105kg payload of a diesel-powered dual-cab HiLux 4x4.
The MG’s tray is described as being able to accommodate a standard pallet, with a hands-free automatic tailgate and a 236-litre frunk being unusual features in this segment.
Inside, the comfortably appointed cabin features:
- Dual 12.3-inch screens
- 360-degree camera system
- Leather front seats
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- 15W wireless charging
- Eight-speaker JBL sound system.

In keeping with its positioning as more of a lifestyle machine than a workhorse, the MGU9 EV also boasts a heated and ventilated driver's seat with massage functionality, along with a heated front passenger seat and steering wheel.
The vehicle supports 11kW AC charging, and DC charging at up to 115kW, at which rate the battery will recharge form 20-80% in about 42 minutes.
On the safety front, the MGU9 EV boasts a five-star ANCAP rating.
No pricing has yet been released but it’s expected the MGU9 EV will comfortably undercut the Toyota HiLux BEV which costs $82,990 (MRLP) for the flagship SR5 dual cab AWD pick-up.
The HiLux also boasts lower outputs of 144kW/468Nm from its dual electric motors, less range from its 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery at 315km (NEDC), and a considerably lower 2,000kg braked towing capacity.
