Aussie car buyers who are still getting their heads around the dizzying array of new Chinese brands that have arrived in recent months can add a new nameplate in the form of IM, a luxury sister-brand of MG Motor.
IM stands for Intelligence in Motion and after a successful preview at the Melbourne Motor show in April, MG has confirmed its new electric premium range will launch with two models, the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV with pricing starting from $60,990 driveaway.
Although likely to be known simply as IM, the brand’s full monicker is “IM Presented by MG Motor,” in a bid to help the new brand establish a foothold by leveraging MG’s reputation and global presence.
MG Claims the IM5 sedans and IM6 SUVs represent a leap forward in premium electric motoring thanks to their elevated design and advanced technology inclusions.

What new technology do IM cars have?
Among a raft of hi-tech inclusions, both the IM5 and IM6 are equipped with bi-directional rear-wheel turning technology, offering up to 12 degrees of rear-wheel articulation. The system is claimed to dramatically reduce the vehicles’ turning circle, making it comparable to that of a compact hatchback, despite a generous 2,950mm wheelbase .
The system works at both parking speeds where it improves manoeuvrability for easier parking, and at higher speeds where the rear wheels turn with the front, improving stability, cornering performance, and overall handling.
MG claims its rear-wheel turning technology helped the IM5 set a record speed for the ‘Moose Test’ – an automotive industry testing benchmark that simulates an emergency where a vehicle needs to swerve to avoid an obstacle.
MG claims the IM5 managed to execute the manoeuvre at a speed of 91km/h – topping the 85km/h record set by the Citroen Xantia in 1999.
However, some websites list the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Manthey as the current record holder at a speed of 86km/h.
How much will the IM variants cost?
There are six variants in total in the new IM range, starting with the rear-wheel drive IM5 Premium and IM6 Premium, both equipped with a 75kWh battery and priced at $60,990 (driveaway).
Stepping up to the IM5 and IM6 Platinum variants brings a 100kWh battery, rear-wheel drive, and a $69,990 (driveaway) price tag.
Finally, there’s the IM5 Performance and IM6 Performance with the 100kWh battery and all-wheel drive, which cost $80,990 (driveaway).

How much power and range will they have?
The IM5 and IM6 Performance variants are powered by an 800V electric motor, which MG claims can rocket the AWD sedan from 0-100km/h in a blistering 3.2 seconds, just one-tenth of second slower than a Tesla Model 3 Performance. All IM variants boast impressive range, with the IM5 Platinum rear-wheel drive with 100kWh battery claiming up to 755km (NEDC), which works out to approximately 642km on the WLTP cycle.
The IM6 Platinum rear-wheel drive SUV with the same battery is capable of 670km (NEDC), or about 570km on the WLTP cycle. MG claims both the sedan and SUV can be charged from 30-80% in just 15 minutes on a suitable DC fast charger.
What are the IM cars like inside
The interior of the IM5 and IM6 feature premium design and finishes, including a 10.5-inch central touchscreen, a 26.3-inch infotainment display and a panoramic sunroof.
There are also luxury seat finishes, and 20 high-definition audio speakers, while rear passengers can stretch out an enjoy the generous legroom afforded by the 2,950mm wheelbase on both models.
That wheelbase is slightly longer than the Tesla Model Y (2,891mm), with the IM6 said to be dimensionally larger than the Model Y, with the IM5 sedan also larger than the Tesla Model 3.
MG has opened the order books for its new luxury brand, which comes a seven-year warranty when serviced within the IM dealer network, with the first deliveries expected later this year.
