It’s become a rite of passage for car makers with a dual cab 4x4 ute to also offer an off-road enhanced variant that sits at the top of the range, with Mitsubishi being the latest to embrace the trend with its new Triton Raider.

The Triton Raider was revealed to Australian media several weeks ago but the Japanese brand has just released pricing for its new model which positions it competitively against off-road enhanced rivals such as the Ford Ranger Tremor and Toyota HiLux Rugged X.

Based on the Mitsubishi Triton GSR Dual Cab, the Triton Raider adopts a raft of cosmetic and suspension modifications that justify its range-topping price tag of $74,880 (MRLP), an increase of $9290 over the previously range-topping Triton GSR.

The extra coin brings a range of additions over the GSR including an upgraded wheel and tyre package utilising Bridgestone AT002 all-terrain tyres, fitted to heavier-duty ROH 18-inch alloy wheels finished in Brushed Bronze with specific ‘Raider’ hub caps.

Exterior design changes include Raider side decals and badging on the tailgate, a different colour front garnish, plus both side protection bars and a sports bar sourced from the Mitsubishi Genuine Accessories catalogue. Underneath is a strengthened underbody protection plate finished in red, with ‘Raider lettering’.

Inside, the GSR’s black leather seats feature orange stitching, with the addition of Raider-branded front headrests and a Raider badge on the centre console.

But it’s the suspension modifications developed by leading Australian engineering and manufacturing firm Premcar that are key to the Raider’s enhanced off-road capability.

Melbourne-based Premcar developed a unique damper package for the Raider, comprising a new front damper that utilises an internal rebound spring to maximise suspension control, along with a new front spring and bump stop.

Front ride height is increased 25mm (10mm due to the new front springs, and 15mm due to the upgraded wheel/tyre package), while at the rear a 15mm ride height improvement is realised thanks to the new wheel and tyre package, which also contributes to the 20mm wider front and rear track width.

The changes are similar to those developed by Premcar for the Mitsubishi Triton-based Navara PRO-4X which debuted earlier this year with a price tag of $68,418 (MRLP).

This current sixth-generation Mitsubishi Triton launched in Australia in February 2024 and was followed in March of this year by the new D27 Nissan Navara, the first Navara to be based on Mitsubishi underpinnings.

This so-called platform sharing was the result of pragmatic product planning by the global Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance which operates both brands.

Platform sharing is well established in the ute segment with the Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max sharing most of their mechanical DNA, and the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok doing likewise.

Like most of its key rivals in the modified 4x4 dual cab space, the Triton Raider gets no under bonnet modifications so features the same 150kW/470Nm 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel and six-speed automatic transmission as the rest of the Triton range.

It also adopts the same Super Select 4WD-II system fitted to the Triton GLS and GSR, giving it the ability to switch from 2H to 4H on the fly and drive in 4H on sealed roads without risking diff damage, plus a rear differential lock.

The Triton Raider lines up against a formidable list of enhanced 4x4 dual cab ute rivals including the Ford Ranger Tremor ($75,090), GWM Cannon XSR ($50,990), Isuzu D-Max Blade ($80,900), Mazda BT-50 SP ($73,490), and the Toyota HiLux Rugged X ($71,990), among others.
