Subaru adds to EV lineup with third model

Subaru announces its third battery electric model, the Uncharted small SUV.

Subaru may have been slightly late to the EV party with the launch of the Solterra in early 2024 but so far this year it’s announced not one but two additional new battery electrics, including the all-new Uncharted compact SUV.

Like the Solterra which is a twin of the Toyota bZ4X , the Subaru Uncharted EV has been co-developed with Toyota and is based on the Japanese giant’s widely used TGA platform, which among other vehicle underpins the technically similar Toyota C-HR+ electric SUV.

The C-HR EV has also been confirmed for Australia but isn’t expected until mid-2027, which will give Subaru a good head start in Australia if it manages to land the Uncharted in the middle of this year, as expected.

Available exclusively with a dual motor all-wheel drive powertrain delivering outputs of 252kW and boasting rapid 0-100km/h acceleration of 5.0 seconds, Subaru is promising the Uncharted will be a true driver’s car, with sharp handling and responsive performance.

A 74.7kWh battery endows the Uncharted with a driving range of up to 522km, with DC fast charging capability of 150kW enabling a 10-80% charge in about 30 minutes.

Also included in the tech specs is 1500W Vehicle to Load (V2L) capability, allowing camping equipment, power tools and other compatible devices to be powered directly from the vehicle.

Like most of Subaru’s portfolio, the Uncharted offers above-average ground clearance of 211mm and a suite of traction control technologies including Symmetrical All Wheel Drive, X-Mode and Downhill Assist Control.

The exterior design showcases a fastback silhouette with a sloping roofline, which Subaru says is designed to enhance aerodynamics and reinforce the new model’s sporty positioning.

Other notable design attributes of what Subaru is calling a ‘Sport Electric Vehicle’ include a wide stance, 20 inch alloy wheels, and distinctive LED lighting.

Inside, there’s a large 14-inch touchscreen, plus dual wireless phone charging, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard.

The safety kit looks comprehensive, too, with Subaru Safety Sense, along with Subaru Vision Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, a 360-Degree View Monitor and Driving Monitoring System (DMS).
No pricing has been released but the new model is expected to sit below the mid-sized Solterra EV which starts from $63,990 (MRLP).

Some media outlets have speculated on pricing being circa $55,000, which would make the Uncharteed competitive with the likes of the BYD Sealion 7 Premium, Kia EV3 Air Long Range, and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

Subaru has stepped up its EV game significantly this year, announcing tech upgrades accompanied by price cuts of around $7000 for its slow-selling Solterra in February, then following that with confirmation of its second battery-electric model the Trailseeker SUV, due in the second quarter of this year.

With the Trailseeker large SUV, Solterra medium-SUV and Uncharted small SUV, Subaru will soon have a family of EV options to showcase, just as consumers are showing a growing appetite for the technology, off the back of spiralling fuel prices due to the Iran war.
