Subaru confirms Trailseeker battery electric SUV

Car Updates

Subaru Australia has confirmed it will add a second battery-electric model, the Trailseeker, to its lineup later this year.

Subaru used the launch of the all-new seventh-generation Outback to whip the covers off a second new model, the battery electric Trailseeker, which is due on sale in the second quarter of this year.

While the new Outback is already rolling into showrooms across the country, production of the battery-electric Trailseeker only recently began at Subaru’s upgraded Gunma Yajima Plant in Japan, with Australian deliveries still months away.

Known in other markets including Europe and the UK as the E-Outback, Subaru has decided to follow the US and instead use the Trailseeker name in Australia, keeping the two model lines distinctly separate.

The company has confirmed its boxy, new electric SUV will feature a 280kW dual-motor powertrain capable of launching the Trailseeker from 0-100km/h in a rapid 4.4 seconds, along with a 74.7kWh battery, standard all-wheel drive, 211mm of ground clearance, and improved off-road capabilities.

Range is an impressive 533km (ADR), with the battery capable of handling up to 150kW DC fast charging which delivers a 10 to 80 percent charge in approximately 20 minutes.

Other notable features of the Trailseeker include Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability and a 1,500kg braked towing capacity.

The Trailseeker is based on Subaru’s e-SGP global electric vehicle architecture, which also underpins the brand’s only other electric vehicle, the Solterra.

Both the Solterra and Trailseeker were jointly developed by Subaru with Toyota Motor Corporation, which holds a 20 percent stake in the smaller carmaker.

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the alliance between the two brands that has seen them collaborate on models including the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86/GR86 sports cars, as well as the Solterra and its Toyota twin the bZ4X.

Like these shared models, the Trailseeker will also have a Toyota-badged doppelganger, the bZ4X Touring which Toyota Australia has confirmed will join its range in in the first half of 2026.

The Subaru Trailseeker and Toyota bZ4X Touring offer a significant increase in performance, range and interior space over the Solterra and bZ4X respectively, potentially making them a better choice for family buyers.

Subaru Australia has given no indication on pricing at this stage, but in the US the Trailseeker is priced approximately US$5,000 higher than a comparable Outback.

Projecting those figures onto Subaru Australia’s MY26 Outback range could see the Trailseeker priced from around $70,000, with lower grade variants crossing over with the top-of-the-line Solterra which currently costs $69,990.

The Trailseeker and bZ4X Touring are the latest examples of how the federal government’s NVES scheme is prompting car makers to add additional zero or low-emissions models to their range, to offset the impact of their higher-emitting ICE-powered models.
