  • New variant: Longer, more spacious bZ4X Touring launches as Toyota’s most family friendly electric SUV.
  • Price and positioning: $69,990, just $2,000 more than the bZ4X AWD, targeting buyers cross shopping the Tesla Model Y.
  • Size and space: 140mm longer body boosts boot capacity from 452L to 550L, with taller ride height and upright tailgate.
  • Performance and range: AWD-only with 280kW dual motors, 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds, and up to 488km WLTP driving range.

Toyota has launched a new, longer body version of its bZ4X electric SUV, positioning the new bZ4X Touring as a more spacious and family-friendly offering.

The bZ4X Touring is priced just $2,000 more expensive than the bZ4X AWD at $69,990 but boasts a body that’s 140mm longer than the existing model, more boot space, taller ride height and increased power outputs from dual electric motors.

Increased size and practicality

An additional 140mm of length behind the rear axle is the key differentiator of the bZ4X Touring compared to the rest of the bZ4X family, which along with a more upright tailgate boosts luggage volume increased from 452 litres in the bZ4X to 550 litres in the Touring.

The new model remains a five-seater, however, with Toyota showing no desire at this stage to match Tesla’s recently introduced three-row, six-seat Model Y L.

Subaru platform sharing

Like the established bZ4X the Touring shares its platform and technical underpinnings with a Subaru equivalent.

In the case of the bZ4X that’s the Subaru Solterra, while in the case of the bZ4X Touring it’s the new Subaru Trailseeker which is due on sale in the second quarter of this year.

Performance, battery and driving range

The Touring features the same 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery as introduced to the updated bZ4X range in December, but where that model is available with 2WD or AWD, the Touring comes exclusively as an AWD with a pair of 167kW electric motors producing combined outputs of 280kW.

That’s a boost of 28kW over the regular bZ4X AWD, which somehow contributes to a 0-100km/h dash that’s claimed to be seven-tenths of a second better than that model’s recently improved acceleration time, stopping the clock at a brisk 4.4 seconds.

It’s also quicker than Tesla’s claim for its current Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD, which is rated at 4.8 seconds for the benchmark dash.

The Bz4X Touring can’t, however, match the Tesla’s claimed 600km battery range although its lithium-ion battery still delivers a respectable 488km (WLTP) range, while supporting 150kW CCS2 DC charging.

Features, Sales Performance and Customer Incentives

Other premium features featured on both the bZ4X Touring and the bZ4X AWD include:

  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Eight-way powered front seats with heating and ventilation
  • Digital rear-view mirror
  • Fixed panoramic roof
  • Two wireless smartphone chargers
  • 1500W inverter
  • 14-inch touchscreen multimedia system with nine-speaker JBL audio system.

Toyota will be hoping its expansion of the bZ4X battery-electric range will provide a boost to sales, which have been modest since the battery electric SUV’s launch here in February 2024.

Last year saw 1041 vehicles delivered, representing a slight lift on 2024’s sales of 977 vehicles but still miles behind the segment-leading Tesla Model Y’s 2025 sales of 22,239 vehicles.

The electric SUV’s sales so far in 2026 are looking much healthier, however, with 840 deliveries as at the end of March representing a 300% increase on March 2025.

That lift is due in large part to a December 2025 upgrade of the existing bZ4X range that delivered a range of significant improvements including a larger battery and improved motor output, more driving range, fresh interior design, a larger multimedia screen, and refreshed exterior styling.

The Touring also adopts these changes and features a similar level of specification to the existing bZ4X AWD, but in addition to the aforementioned technical changes also adds 20-inch black alloy wheels, front and rear skid plates, ladder-style roof rails, resin black wheel arches and bonnet insert, and a rear window wiper.

Toyota Finance has some sharp retail offers in market at the time of writing for the established bZ4X which starts from $55,990 (MRLP) for the entry level 2WD variants.

These include a $5000 deposit bonus for new and demo bZ4X 2WD (Oct 2025 build onwards), or a $7,500 deposit bonus for new and demo bZ4X AWD (Oct 2025 build onwards).

There’s also a $4,200 discount available on the 2WD bZ4X and a $6,800 discount on the AWD Novated for novated leasing customers through Toyota Fleet Management or other third‑party providers.

The Toyota Go loyalty program is also offering private buyers the choice of a free voucher entitling members to 12 months or 625kWh of free charging with the Chargefox public charging network, or a complimentary 7kW home charger, not including installation.
