The Chinese-made BYD Shark 6 has previously beaten rivals to the draw by becoming the first brand to launch a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute on the Australian market.
Now BYD can also lay claim to having achieved the first five-star ANCAP rating for a PHEV ute, further strengthening the Shark 6’s appeal with safety- and efficiency-focused fleets and families.
“For fleets looking to electrify their light-commercial ute range, the Shark 6 presents a new five-star plug-in hybrid option,” ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg said.
How much does the Shark 6 cost?
Priced at $57,900 (plus on-road costs) the Shark 6 joins a rapidly expanding local model lineup which includes the Atto 3, Dolphin, SeaLion 6, and Seal.
What is the Shark 6’s range and fuel economy?
Featuring chunky 4x4 styling marked by a bluff grille, wheelarch flares and angular styling, it promises up to 800km of combined-cycle driving courtesy of its twin electric motors, 29.58kWh LFP battery, and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.
BYD says the Shark 6’s pure electric range when setting off with a fully charged battery is 80km.
Fuel consumption is an impressive 2.0L/100km when the battery is charged but slip below 25% charge and the engine will use a more conventional 7.9L/100km.
What features does the Shark 6 have?
The new model is available exclusively as a dual-cab 4x4 and in a single high-spec Premium trim.
Standard features include:
- 18-inch alloys
- Side steps
- Roof rails
- LED headlights
- Spray-in bed liner.
How did the Shark 6 perform in ANCAP testing?
Shark 6 standard safety features include:
- Dual frontal airbags
- Side chest and side head-protecting airbags.
- Centre airbag designed to protect the front-seat occupants in side-impact crashes.
The dual-cab ute achieved an 85% score for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, 74% for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 86% for Safety Assist in ANCAP testing.
An ANCAP statement said that in the frontal offset (MPDB) test, the BYD Shark 6 passenger cabin remained stable, with all key body regions recording a ranking of ‘good’ protection, except for the driver’s chest which was rated ‘adequate’.
In the full-width frontal test, protection for the driver’s neck and chest was also rated ‘adequate,’ while rear passenger chest protection was ‘marginal’ and neck protection was ‘adequate.’
Other critical body regions for both the driver and rear passenger were ‘good’.
However, due to its size, weight and front-end design, ANCAP said the BYD SHARK 6 poses a higher risk to occupants of oncoming vehicles, resulting in a penalty being applied in the frontal offset (MPDB) test, which assesses vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility.
Five of BYD’s current local models have now earned top ANCAP safety ratings.
