GWM is getting with the strength in the 4x4 market by adding a turbodiesel variant to its Tank 300 lineup.

Tank 300 4x4 key facts

  • Pricing starts at $47,990 driveaway for the Lux variant and tops out at $51,990 for the Ultra.
  • The 2.4-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine delivers 135kW at 3,600 rpm and 480Nm of torque from 1,500 to 2,500rpm.
  • Nine-speed automatic transmission.
  • 7.8L/100km combined-cycle fuel consumption.
  • 3,000kg braked towing capacity.
  • Seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.

The new diesel-powered Tank 300 will be available in two well-appointed grades – Lux and Ultra and will join the existing petrol and petrol-hybrid powered Tank 300 lineup.

The 2.4-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine delivers 135kW at 3,600 rpm and 480Nm of torque from 1,500 to 2,500rpm.

That compares with 2.0-litre turbocharged Tank 300 petrol’s 162kW/380Nm, and the hybrid’s combined outputs of 255kW/648Nm.

Like the hybrid, the new turbodiesel comes paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission which delivers claimed combined-cycle fuel consumption of 7.8L/100km, which is better than both the Tank 300 petrol’s 9.5L/100km, and the Tank 300 Hybrid’s 8.4L/100km.

Importantly for potential buyers who plan on towing heavy loads, the Tank 300 diesel offers an increased braked towing capacity of 3,000kg — an upgrade over the 2,500kg limit of the petrol and hybrid variants.

Pricing starts at $47,990 driveaway for the Lux variant, while the range-topping Ultra is priced at $51,990 driveaway, with the vehicle specifications aligned to the hybrid variant.

That means the new turbodiesel is priced just $1,000 more than its petrol equivalents, but between $8,000 and $9,000 below the equivalent hybrid variants.

How big is the Tank 300?

With overall dimensions (L/W/H) of 4760mm x 1930mm x 1903mm, the five-seat Tank 300 is similar in size and concept to the superseded Toyota FJ Cruiser and sits below the LandCruiser 300 Series-sized Tank 500 in GWM’s range.

All Tank 300 variants are built on GWM's global body-on-frame off-road platform, featuring a double wishbone front suspension and multi-link coil spring rear suspension.

The SUV offers a competitive 224mm of ground clearance and approach and departure angles of 33 and 34 degrees respectively.

Who would be suited to the Tank 300?

The 4x4 is pitched by GWM as being a rugged and reasonably fuel-efficient alternative for those looking to get off the beaten track but who are looking for a lower entry price than most Japanese rivals.

What are the after-sale benefits?

The Tank 300 is backed by GWM’s network of 113 dealerships nationwide and comes with a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre new car warranty, seven-year roadside assistance with 24/7 support, and seven-year capped price servicing.

GWM is also throwing in three years of complimentary scheduled servicing for customers who order a Tank 300 diesel before the end of March 2025.
