Toyota expands Tundra lineup with premium Platinum grade

Toyota has added a new top-shelf Platinum grade to its US-import Tundra full-size pickup.

Australia’s previously insatiable appetite for full-size American pickups has hit some headwinds this year with sales of most models down on 2024, but that hasn’t stopped Toyota from rolling out a new top-shelf version of its Tundra priced at an eye-watering $172,990.

The Tundra Platinum’s price represents a $17,000 premium over the existing Tundra Limited and makes both utes by far the most expensive models in Toyota Australia’s local model lineup, with only the $146,910 LandCruiser Sahara ZX coming remotely close.

Unlike the Sahara and every other factory-built right-hand drive model Toyota sells here, the Tundra is imported from the USA and converted from left-to-right hand drive by Walkinshaw Automotive Group (WAG) at its production facility in Melbourne.

How popular is the Tundra?

So far this year Toyota has sold 299 Tundras, almost double the number registered as sold as at April 2024 when stocks of the vehicle were being accumulated ahead of going on sale to the public in November.

The April 2025 number still puts the Tundra behind its rivals including the market-leading RAM 1500 (873), Chevrolet Silverado (783) and Ford F-150 (506). Additional sales of heavier-duty variants of the Silverado and RAM have helped grow segment year-to-date sales to 3,010 vehicles, a still-healthy number that’s down almost 14% on the 3,490 vehicles sold over the same period last year.

That cooling of the segment seemingly hasn’t deterred Toyota from expanding its presence in the full-size pick-up segment with the new flagship Tundra Platinum grade.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the addition of the Platinum grade to the Tundra lineup demonstrated the company’s commitment to the locally re-engineered US-built full-size pickup program.

“The Tundra remains a niche product in our lineup but for those Australians that desire the size, power and performance of a full-size pickup to meet their work or lifestyle needs, we are proud to say we can offer them a premium product built to the highest standards,” he said.

What external and internal features does the Tundra have?

The Tundra Platinum is distinguished by exterior styling enhancements including a chrome mesh front grille, chrome side door trims, black 20-inch alloy wheels, and black window surrounds.

Inside, the Platinum boasts a more luxurious interior fitout including leather-accented upholstery, front massaging seats, heated and ventilated rear outboard seats, and panoramic sunroof.

What are the Tundra’s specifications?

Like its stablemate the Platinum is powered by Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX powertrain that combines a 290kW/649Nm 3.5-litre twin turbo V6 petrol engine with a 36kW/250Nm electric motor generator in a parallel hybrid system, with the combination delivering combined maximum outputs of 326kW/790Nm.

Power is delivered to a part-time four-wheel drive system with dual-range transfer case and a 10-speed automatic, enabling both Tundra grades to boast a braked towing capacity of 4,500kg.

The Tundra sits on Toyota’s TNGA-F ladder frame platform shared with the LandCruiser 300 Series and new LandCruiser Prado. However, with a wheelbase of 3,700mm, it’s 850mm longer and boasts wider front and rear tracks than the 300 Series.

Measuring 5,955mm long and 2,040mm wide, the full-size pickup is also longer and wider than the popular LandCruiser wagon, with an imposing on-road presence that matches that of its key US pickup rivals.

What safety and technology features does the Tundra have?

Both Tundra versions feature a comprehensive suite of Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance technologies including pre-collision safety system with day and night detection of pedestrians and oncoming vehicles and daytime cyclist detection.

Other standard assistance technologies include emergency steering assist, active cruise control, lane trace assist, lane departure alert and automatic high beam. The Tundra also boasts blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors and a panoramic view monitor, with the Platinum grade receiving a 10.9inch head-up display.

Both grades also feature a power sliding rear glass and power tailgate, with the Platinum adding a power steering column adjustment and a heated steering wheel.

Inside, the Tundra features a 14-inch touchscreen multimedia system with Bluetooth compatibility, AM/FM radio, voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto functionality.

There’s also a 12-speaker JBL premium audio system and wireless smartphone charger plus front and rear USB-C outlets.

Despite its local reengineering, the Tundra is fully covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre Toyota warranty, along with five years of capped price servicing at $450 per service over intervals of six months or 10,000km.
