RACQ’s driving tips to stretch your fuel further

Driving Tips

With fuel prices dominating headlines and household budgets under pressure, Queenslanders are looking for ways to make every litre last longer.

While motorists can’t control what’s happening at the bowser, RACQ says small changes behind the wheel can make a big difference

– potentially saving hundreds of dollars a year and reducing trips to fill up.

One of the most effective ways to cut fuel use is through eco-driving – a smart, smooth and safe driving approach that focuses on anticipation rather than acceleration.

RACQ’s Principal Technical Researcher Andrew Kirk said that while fuel prices were out of motorists’ control, how they drove every day wasn’t.

“Eco-driving is about driving smarter,” Mr Kirk said.

“The harsher you brake and accelerate, the more fuel you use. Driving smoothly, anticipating traffic and avoiding unnecessary stop-start driving can help stretch your tank.

“For drivers of manual vehicles, shifting through the gears as quickly as possible improves fuel efficiency. For automatics, gentle acceleration helps keep the car in higher gears for longer.

“On highways, sticking slightly under the speed limit can help conserve fuel as there is less wind resistance.”

Vehicle setup also plays a role.

Mr Kirk said maintaining correct tyre pressure, removing excess weight and reducing aerodynamic drag (such as roof racks) could further improve fuel efficiency.

“Keeping your vehicle properly serviced can also help reduce fuel use,” he said.

“An engine that’s running efficiently uses less fuel, so staying on top of scheduled servicing can help you get more kilometres out of every tank.”

Other easy changes include turning the engine off if parked, minimising air conditioner use, and combining trips rather than making multiple short journeys.

“Every small change adds up – especially when fuel prices are high,” Mr Kirk said.

Driving strategies:

  •  Watch the road ahead and drive smoothly.
  • Brake and accelerate gently.
  • Use the right gear for the conditions.
  • Shift through the gears as quickly as possible.
  • Maintain a steady cruising speed on highways and use cruise control where appropriate.

Vehicle strategies:

  • Maintain tyre pressure – keep your tyres at the maximum recommended inflation.
  • Service your car to the manufacturer’s schedule.
  • Remove excess weight and reduce aerodynamic drag.
  • Take off roof racks.

Non-driving actions:

  • Monitor your fuel use.
  • Don’t park and idle.
  • Minimise air conditioner use.
