New Chinese brand Deepal joins Australia’s EV market
Deepal announced as the latest in a wave of new Chinese automotive brands targeting Australia.
If you’ve never heard of Deepal, you’re likely in good company as it’s largely unknown here, but the Chinese electric vehicle brand has just been confirmed as the latest Chinese car maker targeting the lucrative Australian market.
Deepal is an all-electric vehicle brand owned by the Chinese Changan Automobile group, which has just appointed leading global automotive distributor Inchcape as its Australian partner.
Inchcape is a well-established presence here and internationally, importing and distributing Subaru, Peugeot and previously Citroen to Australia.
The company recently pulled the pin on Citroen, announcing an end to the brand’s Australian new vehicle sales from the beginning of November 2024.
It now appears that Inchcape may have been cleaning house ahead of the confirmation of Deepal.
In late July, the company also announced Chinese commercial vehicle brand Foton would join its stable from the final quarter of this year, with a range of new energy and internal-combustion-powered utes, vans, and trucks.
Deepal will launch here at a similar time frame to Foton, with Inchcape pointing to a Q4 on-sale date for the all-electric S07 SUV.
Pricing and other details on the new model have not yet been released but indications are it will be powered by a 160kW rear-mounted electric motor, with a choice of 19 or 20-inch alloy wheels.
Deepal’s parent company Changan Automobile is one of the four major Chinese automobile groups, and has 40 years of car manufacturing experience, with 12 manufacturing bases and 22 plants worldwide.
Changan’s self-owned brands include Deepal, Nevo, Avatr and the joint-venture brands Changan Ford, Changan Mazda and JMC.
A statement from Inchcape Australia said the partnership will leverage the strengths of both parties, including Deepal’s advanced research and development capability, competitive products, and Inchcape’s local market experience in distribution and retailing.
President of Changan Automobile Asia-Pacific Shen Xinghua said the company had been studying the Australian market for several years and saw it as a strategic opportunity.
“Collaborating with Inchcape and introducing our successful Deepal brand and product, we have strong confidence that we can deliver new energy mobility and better services to Australian customers,” he said.
