Sealion 7 adds to BYD’s growing range of EVs

BYD’s latest EV offering, the Sealion 7, targets the crucial mid-size SUV segment and has the Tesla Model Y firmly in its sights.

Chinese car maker BYD is developing quite the vehicular menagerie with its aquatically titled Sealion 7, the latest model to join its growing Australian new vehicle fleet.

As the sixth model in BYD’s rapidly expanding range, the fully electric Sealion 7 joins stablemates the Sealion 6, Shark 6, Seal and Dolphin, with the Atto 3 the only exception from the animalistic naming protocol.

Positioned as a direct rival for the market-leading Tesla Model Y, the new medium SUV is available in rear-wheel drive Premium and all-wheel drive Performance variants, with both models powered by an 82.6kWh battery pack.

Charging speed is rated at an impressive 11kW AC, but DC charging is just 150kW, well behind the up-to-350kW capability of some rivals.

That said, most charging is done at home so the superior AC charging capability is probably of more value than the ability to charge faster at public DC sites.

Claimed outputs for the single motor variant are 230kW/380Nm, while the dual-motor Performance ups this to a potent 390kW/690Nm.

Claimed 0–100km/h acceleration times are 6.7 seconds for the Premium and a rapid 4.5 seconds for the Performance.

Unsurprisingly, the extra oomph of the Performance saps its range estimate to a still respectable 456km (WLTP), with the more pragmatic Premium managing a superior 482km (WLTP).

How much does the Sealion 7 cost?

Pricing starts at $54,990 for the Premium and rises to at $63,990 for the Performance, plus on-road costs in both cases.

This positions the entry-level Sealion 7 well below the comparable 2025 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), which recently had a hefty $7,500 price hike and now starts at $63,400 (MRLP).

Likewise, the BYD Sealion 7 Performance easily undercuts the comparable Tesla Model Y Long Range Launch Series, priced at $73,400 (MRLP).
