Five family-friendly bike rides in South East Queensland

Out and About

Strap on a helmet, lather on sunscreen, pack hydration and explore these five bike paths near Brisbane.

One of the great benefits of living in Queensland is the access to a range of riverwalks, off-road dirt trails and purpose-built bike paths.

Whether it’s on two wheels or by foot, there are plenty of great pathways that showcase the best of South East Queensland’s nature and infrastructure.

These rides are family-friendly, include plenty of rest stops and offer the flexibility of shortening or lengthening the journey depending on your level of fitness.

Kedron Brook Bikeway

One of the most popular trails on Brisbane’s northside, the Kedron Brook Bikeway extends from Mitchelton to Nundah covering just shy of 20km. Following the Kedron Brook, the path is flat and has plenty of places to stop, making it the perfect route for an early morning or late afternoon family ride. The bikeway also cuts through Kalinga Park in Clayfield for those wanting to take a rest or check out the local playground.

Moreton Bay Cycleway – Wynnum to Manly

The Moreton Bay Cycleway stretches for 150km and is a collection of cycle paths that connect along the coastline. Whether it’s along the Redcliffe Peninsula, between Sandgate and Shorncliffe, or from Wynnum to Manly, you’re guaranteed fantastic views of the South East’s coastline. The 15km stretch of this trail between Wynnum and Manly stops by Pandanus Beach, as well as the kid-friendly Wynnum water park, so is a no-brainer during school holidays.

Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

The furthest afield on the list but worth every pedal, the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is a must-do for more adventurous families. The track follows the disused Brisbane Valley rail line for 161km and offers picturesque views of Queensland’s countryside with plenty of food and drink stops along the way. The trail starts in Ipswich, continuing through Fernvale before diverting west to Lowood and then continuing north to Coominya, Esk, Toogoolawah, Moore, Linville, Benarkin, and Blackbutt before finally finishing in Yarraman. Mountain Bikes are recommended for this off-road track and the advice from fellow riders is to travel north to south as there are more downhill sections.

Brisbane’s inner city Riverwalks – Hamilton to New Farm

This ‘choose your own adventure’ ride starts at Hamilton running parallel to Kingsford-Smith Drive, past Newstead House and along the river to New Farm Park. Home to arguably one of the best playgrounds in Brisbane, New Farm Park is a perfect place to end this 7.5km ride, but if you’re feeling daring you could extend the journey. Another 3km on and you would pass Howard Smith Wharves before eventually hitting the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. This ride will allow you to take in the best views of Brisbane’s riverside infrastructure and city skyline.

Boondall Wetlands Bikeway

Lying on the edge of Moreton Bay, this popular pathway travels from the Boondall Entertainment Centre to Nudgee Beach and is a nature lovers paradise. The 13km loop is relatively flat and provides plenty of opportunity for bird spotting as you traverse mangroves, marshlands, woodlands and waterholes. If you’re inclined to make a full day of it, the Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre offers great historical displays and kid’s activities.
