The pressure of installing a child car seat correctly can be a daunting task for any parent.
As your child grows, it can be equally as intimidating knowing when to move them from a child restraint to a booster seat and then into an adult seat.
In Australia, children can legally transition to a booster seat when they are at least four years old and have outgrown the shoulder height markers on their current child restraint.
However, before you consider making the move out of a booster seat, industry experts recommend completing a five-step test.
Register for RACQ's free child seat fitting.
RACQ Education Lead Louise Hart said while 7-year-old children can legally move from a booster seat, we recommend parents do this test to ensure their child meets the correct safety requirements.
“Legally, children 7 years old and up can travel with an adult seatbelt, but for their safety should remain in a booster seat until their shoulders go past the maximum height marker on the car seat and fit an adult seatbelt correctly,” Ms Hart said.
“The five-step checklist is an easy guide for parents to follow to make sure their child is ready and safe to move into an adult seat.”

Three tips for installing a new child restraint
- Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer, as even if you have done an installation before each car seat is different.
- Make sure the ISOFIX connectors or the vehicle seat belt is firm while also not over-tightening the top tether strap.
- Ensure you check the child restraint regularly to make sure your child is safe and is in the correct seat for their size and age.
