Older drivers are putting themselves at risk

Neuroscience Research Australia’s (NeuRA) Transurban Road Safety Centre, The George Institute, and Occupational Therapy Australia (OTA) have partnered to release guidelines on the safe use of comfort accessories such as cushions and seat pads in vehicles.
The guidelines aim to reduce the dangers posed by modifications like placing cushions behind the back for better posture or under the driver to enhance height or comfort.
These adjustments can significantly alter the seatbelt’s position, increasing injury risk during a crash.
According to the Transurban Road Safety Centre, about 175 Australians aged 65 and over die in car crashes annually, while more than 4,000 are hospitalised. Chest injuries are the most common among older car occupants who die or are hospitalised after a crash.
The Vehicle Safety For Older Drivers and Passengers guidelines are designed to assist medical practitioners, allied health professionals, and road safety experts in ensuring that older Australians can travel both safely and comfortably.
OTA’s Dr Beth Cheal said people were generally bad at setting up their driving position.
"We see clients who spend a lot of time in their cars and are in agony because of improper setup,” Dr Cheal said.
She said the new guidelines addressed a knowledge gap.
“Unlike with children, there are not specific car seats or boosters mandated for older people,” Dr Cheal said.
“Until now there was really just no information out there.”
Tips for adjusting seating position and seatbelts
- The sash section of the seatbelt should rest over the driver’s shoulder, with the lap part of the seatbelt positioned over the driver’s pelvis. If the driver wishes to use a comforter, they must ensure that it does not introduce slack into the seatbelt or alter the retraction mechanism in any way.
- Information regarding how to adjust seat height or positioning, as well as the steering wheel, can be found within the vehicle manual. It is suggested that older drivers seek additional support whilst attending to this.
- Using any aftermarket product or additional support device for seat comfort may interfere with the driver’s vision and impede safety capabilities of their seatbelt. Any use of these products must be used as a last resort and should be approved by a professional prior to practical use.
