Three generations showcasing Capricorn Caves
Visit Capricorn Caves on the Capricorn Coast and explore ancient formations, local wildlife and family-led tours in Central Queensland.

A shared passion for wildlife, storytelling and the natural beauty of the Capricorn Coast region is bringing three generations of one local family together at the iconic Capricorn Caves near Rockhampton.
Pete Grabasch and his son Karl are both experienced tour guides at Capricorn Caves, one of Central Queensland’s most popular tourist attractions.
Together, they bring the region’s ancient limestone caves, unique wildlife and fascinating geological history to life for visitors from across Australia and around the world.
Now, the third generation is stepping in with Karl’s eight-year-old son Theodore learning the ropes and regularly joining his father and grandfather to experience cave guiding firsthand.

A return to a Capricorn Coast tourism icon
For respected Savannah Guide Pete Grabasch, working at Capricorn Caves marks a meaningful return to the region.
He first began working at the attraction in 2017 before stepping away during the challenges faced by Queensland’s tourism industry during COVID-19.
Today, his return highlights the resilience and continuing growth of Central Queensland tourism, with Capricorn Caves playing a key role in attracting visitors to the Rockhampton region.
Wildlife education at the heart of the story
Beyond their work at the caves, Pete and Karl also own and operate Capricorn Wildlife Connections, formerly known as Little Aussie Encounters.
Their business focuses on wildlife education, conservation and interactive experiences, reinforcing their deep connection to the natural environment.
Tourism has long been part of the family’s DNA.
Before settling in the Capricorn Coast region, Pete worked at Billabong Sanctuary in Townsville, where Karl spent much of his childhood immersed in wildlife education and tourism experiences.
Today, that same journey is repeating with Theodore.

Inspiring the next generation of guides
Pete said sharing knowledge about wildlife and the environment had always been central to their family values.
“We’ve always loved sharing our passion for wildlife and the environment with people,” Pete said.
“Seeing Karl grow up around tourism and now watching Theodore do the same is really special.”
He added that the Capricorn Coast offered a diverse range of attractions, from caves and coastal landscapes to unique animal encounters, making it a standout destination for visitors.
Karl said his upbringing shaped his passion for creating meaningful travel experiences.
“Dad taught me that guiding is about creating memorable experiences and helping people understand the environment around them,” Karl said.
“Now Theodore is asking questions, learning about wildlife and wanting to be involved wherever he can.”
Family values driving Capricorn Caves experience
General Manager of Capricorn Caves Chris Rodot said the Grabasch family reflected the strong community values behind the attraction.
“Capricorn Caves is a proud family-run tourism business, and we genuinely value family, community and connection,” Chris said.
“Visitors come not just for the caves themselves, but for the people, stories and authentic experiences.”
With three generations now contributing, the story highlights why Capricorn Caves remains one of the must-visit attractions near Rockhampton and Yeppoon, offering visitors both natural wonder and heartfelt storytelling.
