Planning an EV road trip? You're not alone if you've got questions. Here's what every EV driver wishes they'd known before starting their road trip.

How do I know where to stop and charge?

Start by scoping out your route a few days before you leave.

Open the Evie Networks app and see where chargers are positioned along the way - you'll typically find them at shopping centers and near cafes, which means your charging stops double as actual breaks, not just waiting around.

The Evie app also lets you get directions sent straight to Google Maps or Apple Maps so navigation once you’re in the car is a breeze and no doubling up across apps is required.

What if the chargers I’ve chosen are busy?

After you’ve decided on your ideal charging spots, identify a backup option for each in case your first choice is busy.

As you make your way to your charging spot, get your fellow passengers to check the Evie app for you. It shows real-time availability of chargers, so you can easily pivot to your backup option while on route.

Do I need to bring charging cables?

No, you don’t need to bring your own charging cables. Evie’s chargers all come with their own cables attached to the charging unit, so all you need to do is rock up and plug in.

How long will charging actually take?

Here's the insider tip: charge between 20-80% for the fastest results.

Your EV charges quickest in this range, then dramatically slows beyond 80%. Unless you absolutely need a full charge to reach your next destination, stopping at 80% keeps you moving efficiently. Most charging stops take 20-45 minutes – perfect for a meal or coffee break.

How do I make charging stops work for the whole family?

Choose charging spots near parks, playgrounds, or shopping centres. It breaks the trip up and gives everyone the chance to stretch their legs, burn off energy, or grab a toilet break while your EV charges.

Try quick 15–20-minute charging stops every few hours rather than one long session.

It keeps everyone refreshed, especially younger travelers. Think of these as built-in breaks rather than interruptions – Evie's chargers range from 50kW to 350kW, so you can match your charging speed however long you plan to stop.

What should I pack

Load up with everyone's favourite snacks and you're halfway to a great trip. Make a family playlist or let each person pick a few songs. For quieter moments, try podcasts like Story Time (ABC Kids), Short & Curly (ABC) and The Perk, they're great for keeping younger passengers entertained.

With Evie's great coverage, reliable network, and a bit of planning, EV road trips will be a breeze!
