What you need to know about the new home solar battery rebate

Your Place

Find out how you could save on a home battery and make the most of your solar power.

The Australian Government has announced a new Cheaper Home Batteries Program, aimed at making solar batteries more affordable, reducing energy costs and emissions.

Australia leads the world in rooftop solar, with one in three homes having it installed, but this new initiative will help close the gap when it comes to battery uptake.1

Currently, only one in 40 Australian households have installed a battery, limiting their ability to store solar energy for use when the sun isn’t shining.1

From 1 July 2025, households and small businesses may be eligible for around 30% off the upfront cost of installing a typical small-scale battery, whether it’s added to an existing solar system or included in a new one.1

Why buy a home solar battery?
If you're considering a solar battery, here are the top reasons to make the switch:

1. Lower your power bills
You can store your excess solar energy during the day and use it at night, reducing your reliance on the grid and saving on electricity costs.

2. Use more of your solar power
Without a battery, unused solar is sold back to the grid for less than what you would be buying electricity for. A battery lets you keep and use more of what you generate.

3. Backup during blackouts
Many battery systems can provide backup power during outages, keeping a limited number of essentials running, depending on how big your battery is and how charged it was at the time of the blackout. Make sure you ask for this function in your new battery.

4. Reduce your carbon footprint
Using stored solar energy instead of grid electricity helps cut your household emissions, particularly at peak times when fossil fuel generation from the grid is higher.

5. Protect against rising energy prices
With a battery, you can shield yourself from unpredictable energy price hikes by depending more on your own solar energy.

Thinking about adding a battery to your home?
With a rebate on the way and long-term savings in sight, now’s the time to explore your options and get ready for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

You don’t need to wait for 1 July to get a quote or even have your system installed. Your Certificate of Compliance simply needs to be signed on or after the 1 July for you to be eligible to apply for the rebate.
