Holden Cruze (2009)

by John Ewing,reviewed October 2009

The General’s new small sedan, the Cruze, is built in South Korea. Buyers can opt for the petrol or turbo-diesel CD or the higher specification petrol-only CDX.

A five-star ANCAP crash rating and good safety features are a plus. Cruze offers competent handling that eclipses many of Holden’s recent small car offerings. Steering is reasonably sharp and consistent but needs more road feel.

The 1.8-litre petrol engine has to be revved to deliver any real ‘go’, the trade-off being it is unpleasantly raucous. The six-speed auto is busy shifting around town and can feel jerky. For improved performance and refinement, the optional 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (add $3000) transforms the car.
