Peugeot 208 GTi (2013)
In launching its new, light hot hatch, Peugeot didn’t hold back in letting the 208 GTI walk the talk.
A labyrinth of twisty back roads through the Gold Coast hinterland was chosen for the drive, followed by a two-hour, closed track session at Norwell.
The newcomer pocket rocket handled both with aplomb. On the track, it delighted and entertained, rapidly washing off some 100km/h under hard braking without complaint lap after lap, cocking an inside rear wheel well off the tarmac, then tucking the nose in early and carrying genuine speed from apex to exit with a show of disciplined body control.
The 1.6-litre turbo four is lively and responsive, with 0-100km/h coming up in a claimed 6.8 seconds. But even more impressive is its ability to deliver peak torque at just 1700rpm, which helps punch the 208 GTI out of corners.
Out in the ‘real world' – on the back roads – it held its line through sweeping bends with conviction and skipped, rather than crashed, over bumps and surface irregularities. Brake testing produced results the equal of the best hot hatches.
The interior is comfortable and stylish, and reasonably accommodating for a three-door light car. Standard equipment is as impressive as it is long – take a look at the 'main features' listed adjacent.
In all, it’s very much a sporting all-rounder – albeit down-sized – in the fabled VW Golf GTi mould.
