Best Micro Car

Mitsubishi Mirage ES

The Micro vehicle class, introduced to Australia’s Best Cars this year, reflects the unerring demand for budget-priced entry level cars.

The Mitsubishi Mirage, at less than $15,000, is among the lowest priced and has best-in-class scores for maintenance and fuel economy. It is the only finalist in its class that comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Inside, better than expected comfort for the driver results from a seat that can be adjusted for improved leg support. Driver positioning is good and all instrumentation and controls, although simple, are easily identified and operated. We noted that none of the finalists offers reach-adjustable steering.

A reassuring five-year/100,000km warranty applies and a good list of standard features includes air conditioning, remote central locking, electric steering, power windows front and rear, power mirrors, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming with voice control.

The Mirage has a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which delivers 57kW and 100Nm mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. On the road, this is adequate.

Indicative Drive Away Price: $14,352
