Cyclone-impacted RACQ members encouraged to lodge claims

News

RACQ is encouraging members impacted by Cyclone Jasper to lodge their claims as soon as it is safe to do so, to help ensure they receive the help they need quickly.

A tree blown over in a storm blocks a road.

RACQ Chief Executive Insurance Trent Sayers said as at 1:00pm today, RACQ had received 11 insurance claims, with numbers expected to increase in coming days.

“Our Mobile Member Centre will be at James Cook University’s Smithfield campus from tomorrow afternoon to support members in the area to lodge claims and answer any questions.

“We encourage members to lodge a claim as soon as they can as the sooner they get in touch, the sooner we can guide them through the claim process and get repairs underway.

“Once a claim is lodged, when it’s safe to do so, we can arrange emergency make-safe work, organise temporary accommodation if your home has been severely damaged and provide cash payments for emergency purchases,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if you can’t find your insurance papers, as we will have your details on file and only need your name and address to start the claim process.

“For a quick and easy process, members also have the option to lodge their claim onlineand upload photos of damage via the online portal.

Alternatively, they can call us on 13 72 02,” he said.

“While lodging your claim is important, safety is the number one priority and we urge the community to stay safe in coming days and contact us if they need assistance.

“If you do need to travel, please check your route before you leave and obey road closure signage – it’s there for a reason.

If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 000 immediately.”

Preparing your claim:

If you are able to safely return to your home:

  • Making notes and taking photos of your belongings will make it easier to submit any claims.
  • It’s OK to throw away all spoiled food in your refrigerator- you don’t need to wait for an assessor to visit your home. Take a picture.
  • Keep a record of model numbers or serial numbers of items you are throwing away to help us replace them.
  • It’s OK to remove material and fabrics such as carpets if they are wet to avoid mould growing. Take a photo to help with replacement.
  • Make a list of essentials you will need to replace, such as bedding, clothing and food. Keep all receipts from these purchases.
  • Remember safety is the number one priority.

What to do after a cyclone:

  • After a cyclone has passed, serious safety threats can remain.
  • Only use a generator in well-ventilated areas.
  • Watch out for dangerous wildlife, such as spiders and snakes, which may have entered your property.
  • Check all power and gas supplies have been turned off if the building has sustained any damage.
  • Stay well-hydrated and wear a sunscreen and a hat if working outdoors.
  • Avoid contact with floodwater if possible.
