RACQ launches motorcycle training courses
Motorcycle riders can improve their ability using a mix of skills assessment and practical training.

It’s no secret riding a motorcycle is fun. It’s a great way to get around, save money on fuel and explore Queensland.
However, it’s also inherently more dangerous than driving a car.
Whether you recently got a motorcycle licence, are jumping back in the saddle, or have been a serious rider for years, training with an expert to sharpen your skills is always a good idea.
RACQ has taught defensive driving, 4WD and caravan courses for years, and has now added motorcycle training to the suite of offerings at its Mount Cotton Mobility Centre.
RACQ’s three new motorcycle courses include:
- Skills Training – technology is used to collect data from riders to grade and improve their machine control skills as they navigate simulated real-world hazards,
- Defensive Training – teaches motorcyclists correct defensive and hazard anticipation techniques,
- Adventure Off-Road Training – helps adventure and trail riders boost their confidence by learning to navigate natural obstacles on the Centre’s 4WD track.
RACQ’s motorcycle courses are delivered by motoDNA which is run by experienced training director Mark McVeigh.
“For our skills training course, we use data to measure riders’ behaviours and have about 100 algorithms that automatically interpret the data and grade the riders based on their ability,” Mr McVeigh said.
“We encourage riders to come and get some training and get measured objectively, rather than subjectively by a human.
“Our course shows riders what their skill level was when they came and then what it improved to before they left.”
Advanced post-licence training has never been more important with riders now making up about 33% of Queensland’s road toll, despite motorcycles being only 4% of vehicle registrations.
Mr McVeigh said over-confidence was a big safety issue for riders and they needed to understand their capabilities.
“Crashing your motorcycle can be a life-changing event. But most crashes are avoidable; training can reduce your risk, improve your skills, and make your riding more fun,” he said.
