Digital detox

How to cut back your technology usage.

Are you addicted to your mobile phone?

For some Australians, a mobile phone is the first thing they see in the morning and the last thing they see before going to bed.

Deloitte’s Mobile Consumer Survey 2018 report revealed 89% of Australians surveyed own a smartphone and 39% of users think they use their phones too much.

Of those surveyed, 26% reported being successful in limiting their mobile phone use, while 34% had tried but struggled to beat the addiction. If you are struggling to disconnect from your smartphone, here are some ways to help your digital detox.

Switch to airplane mode during workouts

Give your mind and body a break from technology by switching your phone to airplane mode at the gym. By using airplane mode you will be able to listen to music without receiving text messages or phone calls.

Switch off app notifications

Turn off all push notifications so that you are not alerted throughout the day. This will limit your urge to pick up your phone and reduce the time you spend on it.

Set yourself a limit

Start monitoring how much time you spend using your phone. Apple’s Screen Time setting can help you understand your phone usage. This feature gives you an overview of your device use for the day, an activity summary showing time spent on your most used apps, how many times you pick up your device per hour and which apps are sending you the most notifications.

Buy an alarm clock

Instead of using your smartphone as an alarm clock, buy one for your bedside table. This will stop you from taking your mobile phone to bed and enable you to wake up in the morning without reaching for your device.

Create tech-free zones

There are times when it’s polite to log off - usually at the dinner table. Having your phone visible on the dining table next to your plate instantly reduces your quality of interaction with family and friends so keep your phone in your bag or in another room when socialising.

Buy a basic phone, not a smartphone

Switching from a smartphone to a basic phone frees you from apps. You’ll only need to check your phone for calls or texts.
