1905

Twelve locals gather at Brisbane’s School of Arts in Ann Street, determined to establish a strong voice for motorists at a time when cars were viewed as a menace.

1914

A member journal titled The Steering Wheel launched. Today its equivalent, The Road Ahead, boasts Queensland’s largest circulation of almost one million households.

1918

The club produces and erects 100 road signs to help motorists on their journeys, giving birth to drive tourism in Queensland and introduces a drive travel service.

1925

First breakdown service patrols appointed. Since then, RACQ has rescued more than 25 million motorists from the roadside.

1939

Piloting service started to help regional members find their way through the ‘Big Smoke’ and cope with city traffic.

1942

Maps and road information provided to the armed forces.

1946

RACQ maintains strong post-war links with the military, purchasing army jeeps for use as patrol vehicles, while many ex-servicemen find jobs with the club.

1948

RACQ driving school established.

1955

Breakdown service fleet equipped with two-way radios.

1958

RACQ travel service opens following the introduction of Australia’s first hotel grading system two years earlier.

1964

First computer installed.

1971

RACQ Insurance writes its first policies.

1977

First stage of new RACQ headquarters at Eight Mile Plains opens.

1984

RACQ House, Fortitude Valley, opens and RACQ Insurance selected repairers appointed.

2001

RACQ introduces the world’s first free youth motoring club membership program, free2go.

2004

RACQ, in partnership with other motoring clubs around Australia, initiates Show Your Card & Save program for members.

2006

In response to the devastating effects of Cyclone Larry, a mobile centre was built so members could quickly access services and lodge insurance claims during natural disasters.

2011

RACQ Foundation established with initial $8 million fund to assist victims of record storm, flood and cyclone damage across Queensland.

2016

On 18 April 2016, RACQ and QT Mutual Bank announced a proposal to join forces and form a powerful member- owned, community-focused mutual organisation.

2017

RACQ Bank launched on 25 September, with a new concept store to open in North Lakes on 16 October.
