How to exercise with your kids

With kids spending more time than ever in front of screens, you may need to encourage them to get active and stay fit.

Trying to get kids to spend time outside instead of inside on a screen is not easy. Even if they have finished their screen time, it’s not easy to get them active. Some parents are now exercising with their kids. Here are a few exercises you can do together indoors.

Planking

Put your elbows on the floor, raise up on the tips of your toes, and keep your back straight and your abs tight in a line. Hold that position as long as you can. Add some competition to the exercise and see who can hold the longest.

Squats

Put your feet about shoulder-width apart and do deep knee bends as if you’re sitting down in an invisible box. Put your arms out. Make sure your knees don’t extend past your toes.

Push-ups

Keep your abs tight and your back straight; you can do this with a straight or bent knee.

Crunches

Sit-ups, but not all the way from floor to knee. Just curl your chest toward your knees.

Lunges

Take a step. Touch your back knee to the floor, and make sure your front knee doesn’t extend past the toes.

Side leg raises

Lie on your side and keeping your leg straight, raise your leg as high as you can. Hold for a few seconds then lower slowly.

Burpees

These will really get your heart racing when you do a few quickly in sequence. Squat, then put your hands to the ground. Kick your legs straight back behind you, landing on your toes. Then do a push-up, bring your legs back underneath you, and jump straight up off the floor. That’s one burpee. Repeat as many as you like.
