Retro Renaissance

Before you enter RACQ’s 2019 Top Model competition, see the 1950’s retro stunner which won last year’s top prize.

Think your vehicle has what it takes to be crowned RACQ’s Top Model in 2019 and grace the cover of The Road Ahead?

Enter now to find out and compete to win a share in more than $9500 worth of prizes.

Be warned though, the bar was set high in 2018 with a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sports Sedan having won the hearts of RACQ’s panel of judges.

The decision was not an easy one, with stunning machines of all makes and models entered under the categories of American, Asian, Australian, British, European, Motorcycle and People’s Choice.

But, in the end, it was the ‘57 Chev the judges deemed the most unique and well-maintained vehicle and one that could stand out in any crowd.

Chevy

Elton Walker, who built and entered the ‘57 Chev, said he was stunned when he found his car was RACQ’s Top Model.

“I never thought it would be crowned Queensland’s best-looking car – I knew it was a nice car, but I never knew it was that good.”

Elton spent years recreating the iconic sedan, while also adding a few modern touches to make it a truly iconic ride.

“It was all taken back to bare metal and had new glass put in it, because when I brought the car in from California it had bullet holes in it,” he said.

“I’ve also fitted a brand-new engine, gearbox and interior, which is the same as the one that came of new from the factory in 1957.

“From the modern side of things, I installed an electronic dash – it looks just like the old analogue but runs like new.

“It has also been custom resprayed in a two-tone Candy Mango and Champagne paint.”

Interior

Prior to winning the 2018 Top Model competition, Elton sold the vehicle but, in a twist of fate, new owner Brian Anderson was unable to display the vehicle and asked Elton to show it at RACQ’s 2018 MotorFest for a last hoorah.

“It was good to have the car back and give it a final send off,” he said.

“It was so much fun that I will be entering next year’s Top Model competition with another build – a 1957 Chevrolet Van Delivery which I have been working on for the past nine years.”

Motor

Brian said after he saw Elton’s meticulous work on the car, he just had to have it.

“The colour really drew me in and I have always wanted a ’57 Chev,” he said.

“The second I saw it, I knew I had to buy it – it just has such an iconic style and presence with the big fins and retro finishes.

“It was my 57th birthday this year so it was fitting I got a ‘57 Chev.”
