RACQ reveals Greater Brisbane’s cheapest petrol stations

News
Independent fuel stations in Rocklea, Underwood, Coopers Plains and Acacia Ridge have been crowned the cheapest sites across Greater Brisbane in RACQ’s latest Quarterly Fuel Price Report.

It comes despite Brisbane once again earning the unenviable title of Australia’s most expensive capital city for petrol, with retailers charging an average of 185.3 cents per litre (cpl) for regular unleaded over the September quarter.

RACQ’s Principal Economic and Affordability Specialist Dr Ian Jeffreys said it was encouraging to see some stations bucking Brisbane’s unfair fuel price cycle and offering good deals to motorists.

“Our analysis has revealed three key suburban clusters where motorists can reliably find low prices,” Dr Jeffreys said.

“If you head to Rocklea or Acacia Ridge, Coopers Plains, you’re in luck - this is where the cheapest fuel can be found.

“Bald Hills, Bracken Ridge, Deagon and Sandgate make up another cheap suburban cluster, as well as Eight Mile Plains, Underwood, Woodridge, Slacks Creek and Kuraby.

The low prices are largely driven by independents in these areas, including Mega Fuels Rocklea which came in at the cheapest servo, charging an average of just 159.8cpl.

“Oom Energy Underwood, U-Go Rocklea, United Coopers Plains, and Pearl Energy Acacia Ridge North rounded out the top five cheapest sites.”

Dr Jeffreys encouraged motorists to not just think about where they fill up, but when.

The Brisbane petrol market is currently in the cheap phase of the cycle so it’s a great time to buy petrol before the cycle shifts and prices increase,” he said.

When retailers hike their prices, they will typically jump up by 50 cents overnight, so it’s important to keep an eye on the cycle and reward the cheaper sites with your business.

To combat these sudden price hikes, RACQ is advocating for market regulationincluding a proposed 5cpl daily cap on price increases to flatten and shorten the cycles.

Earlier this year, the Queensland Government confirmed it was considering RACQ’s proposals, and we’re now working on modelling to help make market regulation a reality,” said Dr Jeffreys.

Looking nationally, Brisbane remains the most expensive capital city for unleaded petrol in Australia – Adelaide was the cheapest, with prices 12.9cpl lower than Brisbane’s average. Even Darwin, the second most expensive, was still 2.2cpl cheaper than Brisbane.

“Greater Brisbane residents deserve a fair go,” Dr Jeffreys said.

“Queensland’s capital has consistently been one of the most expensive for fuel in the country, and it’s clear the market isn’t working in the best interests of motorists that needs to change.”
