Queensland’s travel habits revealed in new survey

The latest findings also revealed more than 10% rely on the organisational skills of others or don’t like to make any plans and young travellers are more likely to follow recommendations found on social media than those of family and friends1.
The statewide survey also asked Queenslanders to rank their priorities for choosing an international destination with travel for an authentical cultural experience and visiting family and friends topping the list.
RACQ Travel spokesperson Ashleigh Paterson said Queenslanders love to travel and are wanting to travel far with more than half of those surveyed intending to travel internationally in the next 12 months.
“It’s great to see more of us are looking to travel overseas and that young Queenslanders are getting creative when planning their holidays,” Ms Paterson said.
“For those planning a trip overseas, make sure you do your research and take advantage of travel packages or deals to save on flights and accommodation.”
The new data comes as the Brisbane Airport prepares for a spike in passenger numbers during the September and October school holidays, with domestic travel set to rise 3.4% on last year’s numbers and international travel tipped to increase by 16.2%2.
Brisbane Airport Spokesperson Peter Doherty said Queenslanders are opting to visit a range of international travel destinations.
“We know when Brisbane Airport is busy, Queensland is thriving, and we are certainly expecting the terminals to be humming these school holidays,” Mr Doherty said.
“In the past year, the markets with the biggest growth in annual passengers has been Japan, New Zealand and mainland China.”
RACQ Travel’s latest data also found more than half (51.8%) have had a mishap while on an international holiday, of which 28.8% have lost their luggage, 23.8% have lost something of value and 17.7% missed their flight.
Ms Paterson said preparation was the easiest way to avoid a stressful travel experience.
“It’s really crucial to have all your documentation, including copies of your passport and travel insurance prepared well before you head overseas,” she said.
“We know travel is stressful for many of us, with nearly two in five Queenslanders (39.3%) confessing to clashing with friends or family while on holiday.
“No matter what your travel style is, planning is the most important part of any holiday checklist and is essential to avoid any potential mishaps.”
