Cheapest servos and best travel times revealed for school holidays
Over the past few weeks fuel prices across Queensland have increased, with some of the most expensive sites now charging above $2.40 per litre for unleaded and $2.90 for diesel.
RACQ’s Principal Economic and Affordability Specialist Dr Ian Jeffreys said it was important for motorists to shop around.
“Unfortunately, escalating conflict in the Middle East has caused oil prices to jump above $100US per barrel and the impact is starting to be felt across the State,” Dr Jeffreys said.
“In Brisbane, the cheapest sites to fill up at include EG Ampol at Deagon on the Northside, Pearl Energy Manly West located towards the bayside, Pearl Energy Cannon Hill in the south and BP Riverhills in the west.”
On the Gold Coast, Atlas Fuel Labrador is the most affordable, followed by Hope Energy at Southport, while Liberty in Bokarina and United at Doonan are the best on the Sunshine Coast.
In the regions, there is a good spread of stations charging cheaper prices including Pacific Fuels Drayton in Toowoomba, Atlas Fuels St Helens in the Wide Bay, Mobil Richmond in Mackay, Oom Energy Wulguru in Townsville and 7-Eleven at Woree in Cairns.
“All of the cheapest stations we’ve found are currently charging just above $2 per litre for regular unleaded and around $2.60 for diesel, but those prices could creep up in the coming days and weeks as the local market responds to higher oil prices,” Dr Jeffreys said.
“We’re urging motorists to fill up the tank now and use price monitoring apps like RACQ’s Fuel and Deals to find the fairest prices.
“The difference between the cheaper and more expensive stations is around 25 cents per litre, which equates to $12.50 on an average-sized tank, so it’s worth doing your homework.”RACQ also analysed traffic data to reveal the best and worst times to hit the road in the coming weeks.
If you’re travelling between Brisbane, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast avoid travelling on Friday 18 September, Saturday 19 September and Monday 5 October if you can.
If you need to drive on these days aim to leave before 8am or after 4:30pm to avoid the worst congestion.
For those using the Bruce Highway between Cairns and the Sunshine Coast, avoid those same days if you can and aim to be on the road before 9am for a clearer run.
“No matter when you plan on travelling, make sure you give yourself plenty of extra time, so you’re not frustrated behind the wheel,” Dr Jeffreys said.
“The most important thing is that we all get to where we need to go safely and enjoy school holidays for all the right reasons.”
