Our planet can only endure a specific amount of greenhouse gas emissions to remain healthy. We only have one Earth to depend on for our survival and well-being, we must protect and preserve it at all costs.
At RACQ, we know that sustainability starts with us. Here’s what we’re doing to reduce our environmental impact:
Together, change is possible. And it starts with us.
The electric vehicle (EV) revolution has begun. It started with scientists and engineers who dared to reimagine the car. Manufacturers followed, creating low and no-emission cars. Now, legislators are offering incentives to cut the costs of buying an EV. At RACQ, we advocate for you to have a range of affordable EVs to choose from and a charging infrastructure that makes it easy to switch.
EVs don’t have a traditional combustion engine. Instead, the EV motor converts electrical energy from the vehicle's battery into mechanical energy to propel the vehicle forward. There are different types of electric motors used in EVs, such as AC induction motors and permanent magnet motors. Unlike conventional engines, EV motors produce no tailpipe emissions.
EVs use a large battery pack to store and supply electrical energy. These battery packs are typically made up of numerous individual battery cells connected together. All batteries used in electric cars are Li-Ion cells, but the exact chemistry of cells can vary. The most common type of EV battery cell used in Australia is LiFePo.
To recharge an EV battery pack, it must connect it to an external power source through a charging port. Various charging options are available, including:
At present common EVs on the market have a range of 350 –750km, depending on battery size. Generally, the further an EV can go on a single charge, the more expensive it will be.
We’re committed to making sustainability easier and more affordable for our members. That’s why RACQ offers everything from solar and battery packages, to green loans and insurance for EVs.
