Mahindra XUV 3X0 MY25 review

Car Reviews
Indian car maker Mahindra has entered the light SUV segment with the keenly priced XUV 3XO
 Mahindra XUV 3XO side view.

Offered in just two variants, the entry-level AX5L rides on smaller 16-inch wheels and is priced from $23,990 driveaway, while the AX7L rides on 17s and is priced from $26,990 driveaway.

Standard features of both models include dual 10.25-inch infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 360-degree surround-view system with blind-spot monitor, electric parking brake, keyless entry and push-button start.

The premium AX7L adds a panoramic sunroof, soft-touch leatherette dash and door trims, 17-inch alloys, LED front fog lights, front parking sensors, and a Harman Kardon audio system with seven speakers.

Measuring just under 4m long and riding on a 2,600mm wheelbase, the XUV 3XO is slightly longer, wider and taller than category rival the Suzuki Ignis, with its compact dimensions helping facilitate a tight 5.3m turning circle.

Power is supplied by a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with multipoint fuel injection.

The engine musters a modest 82kW/200Nm, driving the front wheels via a six-speed Aisin torque converter automatic transmission.

It’s a decently responsive little unit with a distinctive off-beat warble and an impressively flat torque curve that feels relaxed and easy to drive.

It’s not a going to nail you to the seat but there’s enough low-rev grunt on offer to step smartly away from the lights, or to fill a gap in traffic when required.

The relatively high seating position affords good visibility and the XUV 3XO is easy to get in and out of, with a reasonably spacious rear seat by compact standards and a 364-litre boot.

It also boasts a handy 200mm of ground clearance and 350mm wading depth, so has a modicum of all-terrain capability.

The interior design is attractive without setting any design standards, while avoiding the button-free approach that’s increasingly popular.

In fact, there’s a busy array of buttons, dials and switches throughout the cabin, some of which can be hard to decipher against the piano black backing.

The stop-start engine technology is a little clunky but helps keep combined cycle fuel consumption to a reasonably thrifty 6.5L/100km.

That’s not as frugal as category rival the Yaris Cross Hybrid’s 3.8L/100km, but comparable to the 6.3L/100km consumed by Mazda’s CX-3, albeit with a larger and more powerful 2.0-litre engine.

Perhaps a better comparison is the Suzuki Ignis, which is powered by a similar capacity 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine that sips a more frugal 4.9L/100km but boasts less power and torque (66kW/120Nm) than the Mahindra.

Suspension is via MacPherson struts up front, with a coil-sprung torsion beam rear end.

Ride and handling are perfectly acceptable by category standards, with a softly suspended setup that delivers a comfortable ride but allows some body roll in corners.

The vehicle has not undergone ANCAP safety testing but standard safety features include six airbags and electronic stability program, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and smart pilot assist, traffic sign recognition and high beam assist.
