BYD Atto 1 is Australia’s cheapest EV
BYD has cut the price of its already inexpensive Atto 1 electric hatch to deliver Australia’s least expensive EV.
Australians have never had more choice when it comes to affordable electric vehicles (EVs) and BYD has just set the bar lower, shaving almost $4,000 off the price of its Atto 1 electric hatch to position it at an ICE-rivalling $19,990 driveaway.
The offer is for the entry-level Atto 1 Essential, which features a single electric motor sending 65kW/175Nm to the front wheels and a 30kWh battery which delivers a modest 220km of range on the WLTP test cycle.
BYD’s move is the latest salvo in an escalating price war between rival Chinese car makers including BYD, Geely, and MG and positions the Atto 1 Essential in clear air with its nearest rival being the Geely EX2 priced from $26,490 plus on-road costs.
Other rivals include the MG4 Urban which costs $31,990 driveaway, and GAC Aion UT which costs $31,990 driveaway.
While the performance, range and fitout of the Atto 1 Essential is not exactly a match for these pricier rivals, they are currently the cheapest EVs available from these brands.
BYD also offers a better equipped version of the Atto 1, the Premium which is priced at $31,000 driveaway and gains a larger 43.2kWh battery, more power (115kW/220Nm) and up to 310km of WLTP driving range.
Despite its low price tag the Atto 1 Essential comes with a healthy array of standard equipment including:
- 10.1-inch central touchscreen infotainment system
- 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Keyless entry and start
- Vegan leather
- Reversing camera
- Rear parking sensors.
It also comes with a safety suite that includes:
- Six airbags
- Adaptive cruise control
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Lane-keep assist
- Lane-departure assist
- Traffic sign recognition.
Australia’s cheapest internal combustion (ICE) powered car is the MG3 Vibe, which is currently also available for $19,990 driveaway thanks to $1,000 cashback promotion running through September.
The MG3 Vibe is equipped with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that sends its 81kW/142Nm to the front wheels via a CVT transmission. Combined cycle fuel consumption is a claimed 6.0L/100km, which works out to a range of around 750km.
