Asia and New Zealand have emerged as the preferred overseas destinations for Queenslanders planning holidays in the next 12 months.

RACQ research has found Asia was the most popular choice, with 33.9% of survey respondents planning an overseas trip to the region, narrowly ahead of New Zealand at 32.7%.

RACQ Travel Sales Lead Kasey Cooke said ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East and concerns about rising travel costs were prompting many Australians to consider destinations closer to home.

"We've seen growing interest in destinations across Asia as travellers look for holidays that offer great value and are relatively close to Australia," Ms Cooke said.

"At the same time, New Zealand continues to be a favourite among Queenslanders, offering world-class experiences, stunning natural landscapes and easy access without the need for long-haul travel."

New Zealand was most appealing to travellers aged 50 to 54, with 38.5% planning a visit, as well as those travelling with children (37.7%).

The survey found more than 82% of respondents were either very or somewhat concerned about the impact of global events on fuel prices and travel costs.

Asia was particularly appealing to younger travellers, with 43.9% of those aged 18 to 34 planning to visit the region within the next 12 months.

"For younger travellers, Asia offers a diverse range of destinations and experiences at a variety of price points, making it an attractive option for those looking to maximise their travel budget," Ms Cooke said.

According to RACQ Travel data, Japan and Singapore were the most popular destinations for bookings over the past six months while Vietnam also has shown a significant increase in bookings compared with last year.

Singapore is now a more popular stopover destination for travellers heading to Europe and wanting to avoid the Middle East.

The survey found 24.4% of 18 to 34-year-olds had adjusted their holiday budget but still intended to travel, compared with 20.2% across all demographics.

However, this younger age group was also the most likely to have cancelled or postponed travel plans, with 18.5% putting holidays on hold.
