New campaign urges Queensland drivers to brush up on road rules

Queensland drivers are being urged to refresh their knowledge of road rules as part of a new safety campaign launched by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), following several tragic years on the state’s roads.

The Road Rules Refresher campaign comes after 306 people were killed and thousands more seriously injured on Queensland roads in 2025, with road rule violations identified as a major contributing factor.

Ten new road rule videos and a webpage have been developed focusing on the most misunderstood road rules which are:

  • Merging
  • Giving way (pedestrians)
  • Safe following distances
  • Roundabouts
  • Giving way at intersections
  • U-turns
  • Solid white lines
  • Motorcycle lane filtering
  • Changing lanes
  • Keeping left.

The campaign is aimed at addressing confusion and encouraging safer road user behaviour across the state.

RACQ Road Safety Policy and Projects Lead Joel Tucker said even experienced drivers could benefit from revisiting the basics.

“Road rules do change over time, and they can vary between states, so it can be easy to fall out of date without realising,” Mr Tucker said.

“Something as simple as misunderstanding who gives way at a roundabout or when merging can have serious consequences.”

The campaign also responds to strong public support for ongoing driver education, with TMR stating 56% of Queenslanders believe up-to-date road rule knowledge should be mandatory.

Mr Tucker said improving awareness was key to reducing road trauma.

“When everyone understands and follows the same rules the road system works properly – it reduces confusion, improves traffic flow and ultimately saves lives.”

Road users are encouraged to take a few minutes to complete the online quizzes, watch the videos and check they are up to date with current Queensland laws.

“With hundreds of lives lost each year, even small improvements in road rule knowledge can make a significant difference,” Mr Tucker said.
